BOON TO DAIRY INDUSTRY!
“ «WONDERFUL DISCOVERY. . BY A NEW ZEALANDER. \ A.wonderful process of obtiainin-g gcasein from milk without the injurious -and wasteful agency of lactic’ or sulphuric acid. has just becndiscover: ed and patented by .9. Wellington resident (‘Mr J. J. Cronin, of. Elizabeth strq;-f). The discovery will revolutionise the dairy and ‘textile industries, now that casein plays such an important part in the commercial world. Casein can -be put to innumerable uses,‘ many‘ of which are unknown to ‘dairynlen.‘Fir-st and foremost, it is a. Valuable’ form of diet for iufants, invalidsand thhe ‘aged; while» its by-products are more numeruos than far. .Knife handles, piano keys, brush backs, insulators, ‘ imitation marble, and ‘all imitation horn and bone er. ticles-——includiug billiard 'balls—can. be made from thisuscful component; of milk; Whereas casein made into Ia; cream‘ is the finest skin food obtainable,_and as a foundation for cosmetics it surpasses lanoline.» ‘ ' ‘ The present system of obtaining casein from milk is by the expensivle lactic and -sulphuric acid process. By this method .a large percentage 'of the casein is wasted; it is insufliciently _precipitatecl," and what is more. important. when dealing with acid a thorough technical knowledge is essential. ‘ _ I Mr’ J. J. Cron'in’s'proccss is ‘by! the aid of electricity. By Way of comparison 50 gallons of milk'are treated in one hour the acid way; while by thhe new electric process 250 gallong of milk .are treated in 20 minutes, -and 35 to 50 para cent. casein saved——a remarkable difi'erence——while. the casein thus obtainable is by far} and away superior .in quality. No additional plant. is required for this new process; no technical knowledge of acids is necessary; while the method is so simple that a child can operate it. Defatted milk treated with acids for the purpose -of casein m»a.nufactnrc ‘is not only injured by thus losing much of its value as a food for human "con-sumption——-but it also prevents-' many outlets of casein for manufacturing‘ purpose owing to the acidity of its structure. \Vhil'e by the electrical process ‘all the nutritious elements -are sa.vecl'.. Valuable albumin (now such. an important item of commerce) is} easily obtainable, and the casein is absolutely‘ free from foreign substances. ’ '
A diligent rrese'a.rch of the’ casein obtained from thhe electric-a.l' method has revealed to thle discoverer a, hundred and one uses to which it can be put. Pfilzi'ing type——-more lasting and costing less than type-metal, minus the danger of lead-paisoning. he maintains, can be‘ manufactured from casein; also pa.pe.r_. fabrics. washable paints“ and varnishes, and a glue (the lattertdoing aw-ay Wifth the objectionable glue—pot) finer in qu'ali_ty than the best Russian product. -The glue is especially .suitable for delicate veneer work. ~
His most remarkable statement of all, however, is the claim that inflammable protographs films (for cinem?a.to.graphs) can be manufactured from hiseasein. T_his.wonderful electrical process of extractiugx casein has -21. bright future before it.
