SMOKE CONCERT.
3 SUCCESSFUL RAILWAY ‘ V FUNCTION one of the unostwgijoyable smoke concerts held in Taihape for some time past took place at the Fire Br!gade Hall on Saturday evening, when the returned soldiers of the railway staff entertained their comrades -as 3 return for the picnic recently given to the returned members by the remainder of the stafi. Mr W_ R‘. Stevens, president Of 13113 Returned Soldiers’ ‘Association, presided. . The following toasts were -honoured: “The King”; ,“New Zealand Railways,” proposed by Ml‘ 33- Lenihan and responded to by’ Ml’ 79- -7- M 9001“ mick; “The Army and Navy,” proposed by Mr E, H. Norton and responded to by Mr W. Easton; “The R.5..:'.1.” proposed by 1.51‘ W. J. Munro and responded to" by Mr E. Lenihan-; “The Ladies,” proposed by Mr C. Ofsullivan and responded to by Mr Latimer; “The Fire. Brigade,” proposed by Mr H. Mercer and responded to by Mr A_ Russell; “Sports,” pro‘fio‘s‘ed by Mr W, J. Munro and responded to by Mr F. Welch; “The Press,g” proposed by Mr R. W. Stevens and responded to by Mr E. Leniha’n‘;‘ ‘rind “The lMu'sicians,” proposed by Mr Thompson and responded to by Mr H. Hartley. ‘ The concert comprised the following instrumental and vocal items:——Songs«, “Dream Boat,” and “Songs of Araby,” Mr E. H. Norton; musical selection, Messrs G. Arden (piano), and H. Grayling and H. I-la‘rl;ley (violin); comic songs, “live only Come Down for the Day,” and “Actions Speak Louder Than Words," Mr Robinson; song, “How Ireland Got Its Name,” Mr H. McAlinden; song, “Mother McCree,” Mr P. O’Conne-ll (encored); soprano solo, Mr Hemingsway (eucor—ed); musical selection, Mr Hemingway (piano) and Messrs H_ Gfafyling and H, Hartley‘ (violin);‘. _ recitation, “Paddy-’s Drea;'n,” and _.',song, ‘.‘Come Back to Erin,” Mr. Brophy; .' musical selection, orchestra; songs,L“Wllen the Great Big Moon is Shiningf,’ and “Me and_ My Girl.” Mr_ J. Wats-on; recitation, “The Assyiian and the Roses,” Mr C. o’Sulliva_n; duet,_ “Bells of St. Maryfs” Mr Carson (baritone) and Mr Hemingsway (soprano). encoz-ed: song, “Song of My .Dreams,'’ Mr Brophy; song and chorous-. “Oh, Oh, It’s a Lovely War,” Mr E. H. Norton; soprano solo, Mr Hemingsway. At’ the conclusion of a most enjoy‘.able function, Mr C. O’Sullivan, on behalf of the railway stafi, thanked ‘the returned soldier mefnbers of the staff for the splendid evening they had provided, and the proceedings terminated with the ‘singing or “Auld Lang Synef’
