DR. GILRUTH’S ADMINISTRATION
MELBOURNE, Dec. 26.
The Darwin Commission took 'evidence I'egal'ding the suggested misuse of Government property, brands, and stock. In the course of questioning re liquor ordinance Judge Bevan said rt g*a_ve the Audlninistr.atol' great powers. ‘
So-licitor Barrett interjected: ‘_‘ Made him Czar of the North, in fact.” Judge Bevan replied that he did not admit that.
Mr Barrett added: I “I put it to you that he was the greatest pirate that ever came to Australia.”
Judge Ewing interposed: “Th3/c wonld be -all right if you had a. jury, Mr Barrett, but with me it is like water ofi a. duck’s back.”
Judge Bevan denied Mr Barre-tt’s insinuati-on that at a dinner given to celebrate Dr. Gilruth’s reappointment in 1917 to the end ‘of the war and six months after he expressed the hope that the W2l‘ would continue, so that Dr. Gilruth would I'(_2m!ain. What he did say was that, looking at the terms of the appointment, one might be tempted to,wish that the war would last a»-long time.
