The Taihape Daily Times AND WAIMARINO ADVOCATE

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1917. A HAPPY CHRISTMAS.

With which is incorporated . “The Taihape Post. and Waimarino ' I\Tew:=.”

.-After five years absence the spirit of Christmas seems to have returned to Taihape. Some days before the 25th December visitors; strange faces, and those that are seen in town only on rare occasions began to make their fappearance, and from whatever quar-ytcr-rtliey came they brought with -them the happy, contented, satisfied lo.;k «that prevailed prior to the war. the goodwill toward each «other was eve‘:.V~ where apparent, the very atmospheregeing charged with it. The curselof War was nowhere visible; thoughts did not flow backward. in that dil'ection»; all seemed to be looking forward to} ‘reunion, plca.sure,_ and, from the ex-l cellent business done- by sellers of‘ Christmas presents for young and old, I one could distinguish an involuntary if not an actual determination to keep the "past in the background except for something to rejoice over and to be thankful for. It ‘was Christmastime and people hereabout were obviously intent upon observing it ml the good old-fashioned way, for quite halfvtihose in‘ the great crowd on Christmas Eve were burdened nlo'.‘e or less with what had every appearance of being parcels of joymaking. As the cl'ush:Sul',ged back and forth congestion of foot‘way- and even the road. made it _.4diflicult>i:'or" the man in a hurry to get along, he had, however, ample opportunity to note a cheeriness and good-nature that was indeed‘ invigorating, a veritable tonic to the spirit of even a hypochondriac, were the moving mass posses.sed of such a person_ There is no denying the fact that whatever troubles may have obsessed the people on We«dnesday evening, they had been left at home, or laid aside for the time being. Sllnp—l keepers were kept ‘busy in suppigving the needs of anxious. and enthusiastic customers, and from their point of“ view the first real after War Chi-istr-iris will be something to be thalikfnl for; may it only be a forecast of greater things to experience-in the future.
