FIRE AT WELLINGTON.
OUTBREAK. AT .WO-OD DEPOT. SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES. WELLINGTON, Dec. 15. A fire broke out early this morning Davisin the Government Firewood Depot, Davis Spveet, and did enough damage to interfere. seriously with an important scheme for the supply of fuel to Wellington people. The losses included the engine. the saws and benches, a. motor delivery truck, and 20 or 30 cords of cut wood. About 1000 cords of wood étored in the yard -had a narrow eseéipe.
The -outbreak was discovered after six o’clock in the morning, and it had then a good hold_ The fire occurred most inopportuneiy from the point of ‘view of the Wellington pu-“Elie. The manager of the depot had accumulated a large stock of first-class firewood, and had practically completed arrangements for delivery throughout the city on the Block system. The scheme meant that for the first" time good firewood would have been placed within the reaéfi \ of‘s.ll' Wellington people, and it would have assisted materially to overcome the difliculties arising from the coal shortage. The operation of the scheme will have tobe suspended now until after the holi—days. The circumstances of the fir-:2 .;;e not free from a suspicion of incendiarism.
