BANNVING TH E BOOKIE.
MAXIMUM FINES IJVIPOSED. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 3. Louis Curtis and William Pollock, both of Dunedin, were charged in the Magistrates’ Court to-day with having made bets on licensed premises and distributed cards without the name and address of the printer attached The facts were admitted. The magistrate, Mr McCarthy, S.M, imposed" fines on Curtis-' totalling £206 and on Pollock £216. Mr McCarthy said bookmakers, notwithstanding the gradual increase in fines had gone on defying the law and treated fines as mere licenses. It -was the Court’S duty to see the law W:fS not defied with impunity, and to ascertain who was the strongest factor in the Dominion, Parliament or the ‘oookmaker. He inflicted the maximum penalty, and issued a warning that in future cases imprisonment would follow conviction. if
