SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL.
(To the Editor)‘ Sir.——l wish to rcaffirxn and ‘add to the statements made ‘by your correspondent, Mr ‘E. Lenihan on the subject of a. suitable and worthy memorial to our soldiers. His crowning deduction, viz., a memorial possessing anything of utility cannot be a. memorial, but rather an indication that the need for a memorial has been used to provide a, utility, which must surely be ‘of an egotistical nature, and any attempt‘ to erect such a memorial in which utility was the first consideration would undoubtedly be sacrelig-. ions. Why should we belittle the sublime sacrifices of our soldiers by erecting to their memory conveniences for ourselves? It is much to Mr Collins’ advantage to dissipate vain egotisrn in connection with the soldiers memorial. This surely is an occasion for dign'ity.—l am, e-tc., J. C.'WHENUAROA.
