The French are showing symptoms of alarm at the great exodus of Frenchwomen since the war. The Paris "'-T01lI‘I1a1” says that 100,000 Frenchwomen have married ‘Americans, and the Portuguese Lcgation states that Portuguse soldiers have married 3600 Frenchwomen. If the proportion is the same for the British, Belgians, and Italians, about one soldier in 30 has taken home a French bride. .
At a'mass meeting of railway em~ ployces held at lunch hour on Wednesday in Eastown workshops, the fol-< lowing resolution was carried after a good discussion: “That we consider thefitimc has arrived when State help should be given to all married men raising a family, in the way of financial as§istance to help them to feed, clothe, house and educate them, seeing that children are‘ the nation_’s best asset. An innovation was introduced at the meeting of the Borough Council last night. At the head of the agenda paper placed before each councillar was a choice Havana cigar, the gift, we understand, of the Mayor. We do not know whether the practice is to be a permanent one, but if so would suggest that. the bounty be extended to the staff and the press réportcr; it would be equally as much appreciated by them as by our. City Fathers. The suggestion was also thrown out that a “locker” would be a useful adjunct to the meeting room.

Apropos of militarism, the Palmerston Times says:—“Huge quantities of military supplies and equipinen't ‘are reaching New Zealand, which must’ either be fised or wasted, and the staffs -in the chief military districts are in-.in'g not decreased but augmented. Promotions are the order of the day, and three or four colonels are doing the work that one «colonel and a captain found’ time to do before. There is no indication that there is greater aetiv-~ ity amongst the territoriais than there Was in pre-war days; indeed tlle’indications point. all the other way. The mystery is in many cases to discover how so many well—paid heads are putting in their time. The one unquestionable fact is that the country is footing a Defence bill much. in excess of that which was ébeing paid prior to 1914. The only thing that the taxpayers know nothing about is xv‘-.1-at it all really is ‘costing, and for precfiseiy what object.”
