A TAIHAPE CASE. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 18. A claim of £5Ol damages fol'breacll- - promise of marriage was made by Evelyn Mabel Smith, spinster, Christchurch, against Eric Efiward Smith, engineer, Taihape, in the Supreme Court today, before Mr Justice Herdnmn. The case was undefended. Plaintiff stated that she and" defendant beeame engaged when he went away in the Main Body. He sent her a. ring from Cairo, and numerous letters. He stayed with her f.'.mlily at Taihape when he Came back to New Zealand, and seemed anxious to marry. Later he broke off the: engagement, saying that .a “subtle Change” haul“ come over him. The jury awarded £250 damages, ‘with costs on the middle scale.
