He had been seen at this sort of thing on other occasions. and his appc-.11-ed to be such a clear case of eubsolute vagrancy. When he was brought before the court he astonished everyone by declaring that he was not a vagrant, but that he had at least £SOOO.
The case was a<lj(_)1I1'l10d and inquiries set afoot. The man's name was found to be Loenhard Winkler. and he was born at S-o.ellsen, Germany, in 1851. He was of good family_, and he inherited a large sum from his father, but lost most of it in speculations. Then he went to Anrerica, where‘, as a llorticultul-ist, florist. and lanscape gardener, he flourished. He saved money in and about New York for 20 years and then, in 1906, he came to Melbourne with between £IO,OOO and £12,000. He speculated in mining shares, and lost perhaps £3OOO. However, other share deals were shrc-we and profitable, and when war broke out his investments in nlines_.‘rranlways, rulb-‘oer, sugar and pictures were sound and I'etlil'nihg a large income. He was probably worth at least £IO,OOO. _
