A PROTEST.
(To the Editor.)
Six-,~—l sfifirom your report of the Parliamentary "proceedings that the—to my, mind—~absurd proposal to spend £IOO,OOO on a obelisk ‘to comnlemmorate the victory of the Allies in the 01P~‘Gre-at War was carried. in the House of Representatives. but not niithout
strenuous protest. Now, sir, it seems to me that, to waste such an enormous sum of money on so useless“ a structure, at a time when money is required for such burning qu€'s"tions.as the housing of the people, schools, and colleges for our children and youths, the roading of the "Stick blocks, shipping, railways, and other'.problems of vital moment to every member of the community, and when such questians are crying aloud for immediate settle~ ment and are being held up.for want of funds, I repeat, that to waste such ,3 sum on what could only be a monument to our own vanity, ignorance, and stupidity is “the very mockery of hell,” to use a Byronic phrase, and I hereby make my emphatic protest against it, and trust every elector will do the same at the coming elec~ tions.——l am, etc.,
JAMES SMITH.
