REDUCTION IN FLOCKS. LOSS OF 709,748 FOR YEAR. ' RESULT OF SEVERE WINTER. WELLINGTON, Friday. The sheep returns for the Dominion show a net decrease for the year of 709,748. In the North Island the decrease is 546,338, and in the South Island 163,414. The figures are for the year ended April 30’ last, when the total nuln‘b~er of sheep in the Dominion was 25,828,~ 564, as against 26,538,302 the previous year. ‘ There are now 24,065 sheepowners in the Dominion, a decrease of 778 for the year._ ' The breeding ewes lrave fallen in number from 13,022,034 to 12,341,900, and the dry ewes have increased .fr.o‘m L-598.749 to 1,811,397.
