THE UNEXPECTED.
During the past few years members -of the fair sex haveinvaded many channels in which Ilium held suprenie control To find a. young lady an authority on the Stud Book, and all its in‘~t-ri.ca‘te. reading would have been genenally thought. an unlikely happening. In a recent issue of the .Australasian “Goodword” writes: “While in ‘Sydney I was introduced to a bespectacled young miss, who has a remarkable weakness for acquiring knowledge of “thee Hlol‘oughbred horse, his breeding, and his doings_ She is. the daughter of‘ a country professional man in New South Wales, and was staying with her mother at Coogee for the race season. Our handicapper. Dr. Long, had a year or two ago met this noted young lady while on duty in Sydney, and had informed mc of her striking capabilities, and I was Very pleased to have the opportunity of meeting her. Shy in her manner, she quickly gets animated when the subject is li-orse. Dr. Long, who is no mean authority, thinks the young lady knows more of the English and the Australian Stud Booksthan 99 ‘Cut of every hundred men who closely follow racing. She can trace back any pedigree wi.t7hout book reference, and can tell you the family to which «any thoroughbred belongs. She is familiar with the history of many of the turf celebrities (man andhorse) in England and Australia; she is an enthusiastic student of breeding and form, and a good; judge of the points of a. horse, while the appropriate’ naming of rasehorses, is. a subject which specially appeals to her.» The brilliant running of Woorak -at R-andwick first directed the young la'dy’s attention to a study of nl_att‘crs pertaining to the horse and the turf. ‘She retains in her mind everything she reads or hears. The study of the horse and of racing is only‘ a hobby. She is a classical scholar, and takes -a. more serious interest in English literature, of which her knowledge is considerable. Her memory for historical incidents and dates is. never at fault. And she is only 18 years old!”
