The Taihape Daily Times AND WAIMARINO ADVOCATE

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1919. CO-OP. DISTRIBUTING COMPANY.

With which izs incorporatefl _ “The Taihape Post and Waimarino Newn.”

h -—‘—----o————._ To-morrow, another chapter _in the history of the progress of commerce, aswell as of primary production, in the Taihape territory_ and town will _‘ be, reached. ‘The Farmers’ Co-operative Distributing Company will hold their initial sale of stock in the splendidly ctmstructed new yards, situated in the cleft between higher ground, at the intersection of Moa Street with the Main Street, just at nfe north end of the business pgrtion of the town. Thenew stockyards will make no mean show on Wodriesclay, as there are considerably over 1200 sheep and cattle, of all sorts, listed, and they are in those convenient lots that many farmers are at this time of the year looking for‘ It is- quite safe to predict that the first sale held by the Farmers’ Co—operaTive Distributing Company in this district, will be one of the most successful of all the initial sales of the kind they -have yet held. Co-operation is the ideal method of conducting industries; it is antithetical of trusts and combines, for buyers as well as sellers, consumers and producers, have all combined to ensure equality of opportunity in everything for which they have come together. The very few constituting trusts and combines, on the other hand, fatten upon the lifeblood of both producer and consumer; they are the middle monsters who have insinuated themselves until they were strong enough to seize both production and consumption by the throat, and use them in becoming filthily and dis» astrously rich. Whole countries are devastated by trusts and (:.<)mbille.:_, while the governments in the for-e:no:;t civilised countries of the vw':.rlr,’. rm urging and ‘encouraging the the institution and growth of co-operative societies as the surest and most effective way of combating increases in cost ot living. The ‘Fa,l'nlers,-’ Cooperative Distributing Colnpall_\-' did notmake its ‘pr'esence known in Taihape :by any great flourish of trumpcts; it came quietly and seems. to have avoided publicity as much as possible. The general public kllowfittle about ‘-that its full aims and ' Jet-"ts "are; they have seen the evolution of the nu»s':-up-todate class of stock saleIv'£|.l'dS in their midst, and «luite9Xpected that somebody would Start business operations there ‘ some day. There is ‘little justification for assuming that the Co-operative Company will enter into serious competition with present stock firms. It must not }be overlooked that, as a stock centre, Taihape is in its very infancy, and :t may confidently be expected thz:.t., so long as farmers will cast their Votes in favour of “metal’ whenever opportunity offers, there will ‘be other ::?.->o‘-I firms coming along to compete for their business. It is truly amazing that long Occupied miles and miles of Col'r!ltl'.V should h.-I'.’-3. r~~maine,l so' long Withmlt Dassable roads but the spirit is now abroad for better roads. The Price that is going to rule for a It'll?! “"10 Yet *0 C0‘b11:-. for -wool and meat *“HI‘I"cmTS the last pound of both b,-ing strivrlr for, and it is :Ip'pm_:nt that increased production. as the result of metalled‘ roads, will pay for the roads :1 dozen times over_ As the reading into the hinterland is improved so will

the volume of stock coming in to sale-‘é yards, meat to freezing works, and; wool to railway stations: continue tot increase in almost exact proper-tion,l and so will more stock and station firms come along to share in the busi-; ncss. VVhen a huge slice of the‘ HaWkc’s Bay County is passed over to Rangitikei, it is because its business has commenced to pass over Rangitikei roads, Such as they are. lbut there; is no occasion whatever to dwell on self-evident facts in connection with the fast developing area from which stock, meat and woolwill increasingly continue to came into Taihape from district farms that are only far away for want of better roads. Co-opel'a-tion has been resorted to by farmers, b'ecause they have found it the readist, most practicable way out of the clutches of trusts and profiteers; -cooperation puts the smallest holder in—to a position to enable him to obtain as just a return for his produce as the big. holder; it also enables «him to satisfy all his farm requirements -at the lo«west‘l‘evel of cost. Co-operation amongst farmers has come to stay; since the registration of the New Zealand Farmers’ Distributing Company, only a very few years ago, it has experienced a wonderful developmnt, in‘erase in volume of business and TES extending operations are. to say the least, bordering on the phenomenal. .'l‘o-morrow it passes another milestone on its road of progress, when it will hold its opening stock sale in this neighbourhood; that success awaits its auctioneer is assured, but this, to the “Company is a mere incident in‘ its Iyoung, vigorous life; it will go on folIlowing farmers and farming wherever lthey exist, one is the life-blood of the other.
