TAIHAPE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The usual monthly meeting of -tho Council was held last night. Present: His Wonship the Mayor (A. J. Joblin, Esq., Cl-s. Turnbull, Timb:s, Etevencaux, [Reid, Fookues, ‘Davies, and ‘Cunning’hame. ‘
Cr. Cunninghame (Depu~ty—_Mayol') took fhe chair, pending the _ M3Y‘°"’s arrival from a prior engagement. That Von Zedlitz’s reappoin-tnn‘nt to the staff of Victoria fmvllege was undesirable, was the opinion of the \Vanganui Borough Council, as expressed in a letter, and the local aCouneil’s endorsementi of this objection was invited and conceded. ‘ The Taihape Athletic Club was granted the use of the Oval Domain on New Year’s day, on‘ the usual eondi--tions. A petition was received from 5.: majority of the local shoopkeepers, through Messrs Fullerton and Smith, with respectto hours to be observed by the business people in the Borough. The hours were: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridfiys, to close at’ 5.30; Thursdays at 12; -Saturdays, 8.50P.M. It was also desired that ‘thou hours for fruit and coxifectioners’ shops be extended till 10 pm}. on ordinary days, {
The Department of Intaernal Affairs wrote stating vthad; £305 subsidy for Efeace celebrations was available. A letter was received from the Department of Agriculture re sections for workers’ Dwellings, which led the Mayor to remark -that he -had interviewed the represenfative of the Department, Who was more than satisfied with the section near the ceme-‘ tery.———Reeei‘ved.
The transfer of a section from Mr Evans to Mr Ivory was agroged to.
The Waihi Borough Counc'il asked. the Council to endonse a resolution asking the Government to prohibit the export of timber from =the Dominion until local markets are supplied.——Letter received. A
Mr J. Whenuaroa, in a letter to the Council, pointed out that =the Maoris were raising funds for 2. commemorative memorial to be erected. -to the men (native and European) who had enlisted from ?this tiistrict. .-He offered to hand over the money (some £125) to the Borough Council, or a. c.olllnliffee_ appointed by. i;-t,._!a.n;d invoking the Council’s assistance.
The Mayor said the Council would do ‘all "they could to assist the natives in their laudable object. Cr. Cunninghame thought the Maoris wanted the memorial established on some part of the Borough. V -Cr, Reid suggested calling a public meeting and consulting the people, and forming a committee to go into the matter. Cr. Eteveneaux said the ‘M-aoris wanted to hand over the money to the pakeha, and let them proceed with the project. Cr. Cunninghame considered ..“or the sake of the town something should be done in the niatter, and it was not too soon to move. . Or. Reid said Mr Whenuaroa prepared to hand over the money to the Council or anyone appointed by it, with the ihea -of getting something Worth while done for the Natives sand Europeans. h The Mayor, Crs. ELECTRIC LIGHT AND WATERWORK COMMITTEES REPORT. The report of the above committee was read as follows and adopted:—— Your Committee recommends that miles of 19-16 W.p. cable be obtained from Messrs Carrick Wedderspoon and Co., Ltd. at an approxi- ‘ mate cost of £142 per mile.‘ That an extension of the eleetric mains be made as recommended in the engineer’s report of 13th inst. at an estimated cost of £240. Note: This will ensure a full supply to Kaka Road and to houses from the hospital steps along Kiwi Road to Ruru Road to a point opposite to Lot 1 of part section 11 and 12 Ohinewarua, a branch line will also be run along to Titi Street from Kiwi Road to the end of Same and in Thrush Street to opposite Lot 6 of Section D.P. 2264. Current to be charged at the present rate for the outer area. That the tools requisitioned for by the engineer be obtained excepting the afirst four items and substituting an electric power drill ad foot emery Wheel for items 3 and 4_ Your Committee reports:—— Having authorised the electrical engineer to have the 9 h.p, motor repaired at once. Having received S. Ridley’s resignation -as second power house "attendant, consequently have promoted G. Coster to second man, and appointied ‘W. Durham to Coster's late position. A special reptfff. was submitted as follows; and as it was a provisional A. report it was merely received:— ‘A Having engaged the services of Mr H. 'l‘. Toogood, Consulting Engineer of ‘Wellington to report on the question of water supply. Mr Toogood has visited Taihape and made a. two days’ examination of the present plant, underground, and gravitation scheme. The reservoir has also been examined, rough levels taken, and your ‘Commit- \ tee expects to present a report and approximate estimate to the Council in the course of a week or two. , GENERAL. -Cr. Cunninghame said the Inspector should notify everybody, and would like that instruction from the Council, and he moved, “That all those not connected up be notified by the inspector to go on with the work_
Cr. Reid said of the two who had been notified one was going on with the work and the other was waiting for estimates. The Town Clerk said Mr Clarkson had been given notice and had done nothing. As far as the inspector was concerned this was as far as he could go, as _he had no power to prosecute. The inspector had in some cases prepared specifications for Work. It was necessary to haxfe 3. special resolution" from the Council to prosecute in c2‘l.s'es of failure to carry out the work after notifiiation.
Cr_ Reid moved, that instructions be given to the inspector to proceed against anyone not connecting up after receiving a mon’th’s not.ice.——Cal'ried,
A deputation consisting of Messrs McLennan (Athletic Club), Kelsall (Rugby 'Union),, M. McLaughlan "(Hiberians), and Ryan (Rangitikei A. and P. Association) waited on the Council urging the necessity of providing conveniences in the Oval Domain. After hearing the views of the deputation, the Mayor moved that the question of erecting urinals and conveniences be referred to the Works Committee for a report 011' the mafter as soon as possi_ble_ ‘A special meeting of the Council will be held as soon as the report is, ready.
