§ DUE TO FAULTY APPLIANCES. ‘ ' 40 MINERSKILLED. ! : Received 9.30 am. I . LONDON, Oct_ 21. ‘ The entire workings of the Levant tin mine extend under the Atlantic. An accident occurred, whereby forty men were believed to have been killed owing to the collapse of_ the Winding engine, and to the breaking of iron couplings supportingathe vertical be-am ‘of the down‘ shaft, and the ‘antiquated form of elevator known as a man engine, with small platforms which project from the beam at intervals of twelve feet, corresponding to platforms placed on the Side Shaft; With an HDward and downward movement. The beam enables the miners to ascend and descend by twelve foot stages. The collapsevoccurred when the miners had finished their shift and were returning‘ to the surface. Thus many Were thrown headlong to the bottom of the shaft over 1200 feet deep; A. number are stillfentomhed,_ The moans’ of the injured Were ’hea.rd.on the ‘surface Nine bodies have been recovered 1 ‘
