The gale on Saturday night, blew so fiercely in the Wairarapa. that the race train returning to VVC-ilington from Masterton was held up for an hour near Pigeon Bush_ Finally the crew broke the train in two, taking it to Cross Creek in sections. The city was reached at midnight. The new automatic telephone system was inaugurated at midnight on Saturday, and is apparently giving satisfaction so far as can be judged on a brief trial. .
