The Daily Chi-onicle’s Riga corres. pendent. states -that Colonel Berkais fired 011 white flags, with which Colonel Bermondt, on Sunday afternoon, attempted to open a truce. The British mission to Helsingfors reports that Colonel Bermondt addressed a Note to the Allied missions in theBaltic provinces, alleging that the Esthonians and Letts commenced hostilities against his troops. Colonel Bermondt was therefore compelled to take €lcfi~o-n in Order to restore order. The message adds: There is no truth in these. statements. The -Germans are using gas shell, and also bombing Riga. The Letts blew up bridges,- and are exchanging rifle shots with the Germans across the river. _ Esthonian armoured trains have arrived on‘ the Pskov-Riga railway, and are replying to German artillery fire.
