The Daily Chi-onicle’s Riga corres. pendent. states -that Colonel Berkais fired 011 white flags, with which Colonel Bermondt, on Sunday afternoon, attempted to open a truce. V ‘ A steamer is in readiness to transport British residents from Riga. A shell struck a British Mission, but ‘there were no casiialties. ‘ * German envoys" warned Bl'it.ish'de-A stroyers to leave the harbour on Sunday evening, announcing that a heavy bombardlnent was imminent. 1 Carts collect bodies in the streets. The besiegers are reported to be suffering heavy casualties. Two German battalions ]lTlltllali:s7 attacked, owing to the darkness. The British mission to Helsingfors reports that Colonel Bermondt addressed a Note to the Allied missions in theBaltic provinces, alleging that the Esthonians and Letts commenced hostilities against his troops. Colonel Bermondt was therefore compelled to take €lcfi~o-n in Order to restore order. The message adds: There is no truth in these. statements. The -Germans are using gas shell, and also bombing Riga. The Letts blew up bridges,- and are exchanging rifle shots with the Germans across the river. _ Esthonian armoured trains have arrived on‘ the Pskov-Riga railway, and are replying to German artillery fire.
