' At the Anglican Synod, the finding of the committee set up to deal“ with the question.-of the stipends of the clergy ~ was as follows.—— ‘ “That the scale of stipends in the majority of cases now paid is wholly insufficient for the services rendered, and that they are quite inadequate for the support or the clergy.” E \ ' “That stipends paid to Maori clergy" are so low as hardly t67Tlmount to ) payments at all. It is impossible for _ these men to live without supplementing -their income 13y-fiarming or other pursuits. ’ ’ _ In his address Bishop Sedgwick said there w.as a scarcity of clergy throughout the province. We bewail the fact that so few of our young men are olfering themselves for I~lol_s"'Orders. Cannot one of ‘the reasons be found here, While no one with a sense of this vocation would consider for one moment What he could make, but of the minis- ' tery he might reasonably hesitate to enter a profession in which it would be impossible adequately to SUPP°Tt 3 Wife and bring up a family.
