JESUIT iFATHER’S GREAT WAR WORK. LONDON, Oct". 10. I Sensational revelations are made on the part played by a Jesuit, Pere Meuss, during the first two years, of the war. He was a well-known social worker in Belgium before the War, and originated at daring scheme with the object of niaintaining the moraT'e of Belgians under the German yoke. As director of organisation, he assisted in forwarding 1200 letters from Belgian sc-ldiers ‘to their wives in invaded dis‘triets. He also assisted Nurse Cavell in helping «£OO Britih soldiers over the f2.'on’ti-er. in addition to so'ldiers -of
many other nationalities. Prisoners were taken to Brussels to be disguised. Here they met a li."rtle girl who said nothing. but the prisoners followed until the child stopped outside a house in Which Nurse Cavell was waiting-_to meet the prisoners. Here ‘they were bandaged up and transformed into hos{Hal patients until Pere Meuss was al.-lc to arrange their transfer over the fron‘»‘el'. On one occasion Pere Meuss, Clxessed up as a ca‘ttle driver and went to Ostond. where he found a lurking p:_aco of (-"rerman submarines. Another time, dressed as a pastry-cook, he attended :1 dinner of Zeppelin officers, ~and learn‘? of an impending raid on Britain. He notified the British Admiralt_V by c,.arriel- pigeons, sent via H< land. Pere Meuss chanced to be in Holland when Nurse Cavell.Wa.s arre-.s‘ecl, and thus escaped the fate of the IT.l.HjOl‘il})r' of ‘the leaders of the o~rga:1'1s:1ti:0n. Belgium has conferred :1 «7<-eorZl.’rion on Pere Meuss.
