MEAT IN COLD STORAGE‘

CLEARANCE OF OTHER LINES. T ‘ The congestion of the freezing stores in the Auckland district, which has been more or less acute——-sometimes idangerously so——since the outbreak of ‘the war, is‘ being gradually relieved. Practically the whole of the acculil‘ulated stock of primary products that were held.ill store on behalf of the Imperial Government, with the exceptlon of meat, have now been cleared, and it is anticipated there will be a. further substantial ‘reduction of the meat stocks by the time the coming slaughtering season opens. The Corinthic, which is expected to { complete loading on Wednesday, is‘ taking a. fairly large cargo from Auck- 3

land, including 30,967 carcases of mutton and 24,801 carcases of lamb from the Farmers’ Freezing Company, ,and 18,340 carcases of mutton and 500 carcases of lamb from the Westfield Freezing Company, as Well as the usual 5 percent. of meat sundries. The vessel is also taking, on behalf of the Farmers’ Freezing Company, 10,648 crates of cheese and 1274 casks ‘of tallow, 57 boxes of dripping, and 41 casks of pelts. ’ I 4 The managing director of the Farmers’ Freezing Company, Mrs. J_ Ambury, stated "on Saturday that the Corinthic’s shipment would clear the company's storesppractically of everything but_nlea.t, and reduce the meat stocks to 250,000 freight acrcases. The total storage capacity of the company's works is equal to 700,000 freight careases, but a portion of this space has to be devoted to butter and cheese.

Referring to the statement of the Prime Minister that the available shipping space to December would .re.duce the meat stocksof the Dominion to apparently 3,000,000 carcases, Mr Ambury saidfhis would be rather ‘better was anticipated some time ago, but in his opinion, it Would still be wise for the producers to efi'ec_t .an'extension of the meat requisition for another year. .

The position at the \Vestfie:l<l -and the Whangarei =companies’c works is similar to that at the Farmers’ Freezing Company"s stores. After the shipxhents hy the Corinthic ‘both stores will still carry stocks to within about one-quarter of their full capacity. about 115,000 freight carcases being stored at Westfield and 67,000 at Whangarei. Other commodities, including WOOI and tallow, that have been stored by the companies mentioned, hzxve been cleared. ‘

In regard to hemp, it is stated that considerable qua._nti-ties of ‘fibre are still held in store, but that these would readily be cleared providing market

conditions and freight rates become more favourable to shippers.
