THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1919. THE TAIHAPE FREEZING COMPANY.
With which I'l3 incorporated ' “The Taihape Post; and Waimarino News.”
,‘ 'By‘ consistent loyalty‘ the‘ Otaihape Farmers’ Meat‘ and Produce ‘ Company has"‘co‘mpleted the most successful year’s business since its establishment; a year’ operations that must, while the district is being ‘tested, be considered remarkably "successful. In fact, "with the niachinery aiid storage available nothing more satisfactory could be expected, and both directors and oflicials have certainly earned the best. thanks of, not only shareholders, but of every resident of -the Taihape territory. Looking at the balance-sheet presented to shareh-olders at the annual meeting held yesterday, despite the rather ovcrcondensatiori of items, it is apparent the situation is quite what the report, and the President, in his remarks in moving its adoption, claimed for it. The greatest satisfaction for shareholders, and farmers who use the works, is contained in the fact that a dividend of '7 per cent on ‘the paidup capital was declared; the initial step was made of carrying forward a. fair sum, besides making a Very considerable rebate to suppliers fl‘o.o7.lllg‘ on their ‘own account. Neither one of these proofs of profit would have influenced shareholders much, perhaps not at all; but the ‘three, which absorb. ed a sum running closely on to fire ‘figures, is an ‘indication that the directors are fully satisfied with the year’s work and earnings; an indication that no shareholder can, in justice, look askance at. Whatever may be the position in other freezing works from storage congestion, there is going to be no congesfidn troubles at the Taihape Works. The chairman enipliatieally assured yesterday’s, meeting that the prospects for farmers in this district during the coming season were particularly good, and the outlook for the company was indeed very bright. In this connection it may be well to note that farmers have not only established a freezing works. but they have set up the very best class of information bureau in their Board of Directors, which cannot, from its nature, refrain from -acquiring all there» is to know in these times, when meat exportation is beset with so many difficulties, and markets are iitful, not unlikely to pro- ‘ vide ssurprises of one kind and another l at any timC_ From a: survey of the: meat situation in America and ‘Europe: there can be no doubt at all about the} prediction. of success made by Mr Gorden, and were he not an ultraist inl carefnlncss he might have extended the successful period by, at least, a.not’~ller year. He might. also have said, with reasonable assurance, that in the next two seasons of plenty shareholders had the opportunity of building up their works, ‘rendering them capable of withstanding any stressful period, or of fully exploiting any better conditions than new -obtain. It was made perfect. ly clear that further extension of the works was an urgent and -absolute necessity, -both for eheapening working operations and for increasing storage Capacity, and the response of shareholders present was redolent of fullest confidence in their works, some £SOOO worth of unallotted shares being applied. for in a few minutes, thus permitting the proposed extension to be, promptly proceeded with. The business I has now undoubtedly found its feet;‘
over 40,000 head)’ of sheep and cattle were put. ‘through last season more. than’ in the previous year, and from present’ appearances there are ycasonable hopes that this increase will be more than equalled in the coming season.
