The application of Messrs Coward‘ and Co., London, to act as London agents for the purchase of plant when requii-ed, was received. The Chanrbcr of Commerce Wrots asking if :1 room suitable for the purpose of the meetings of the Chamber was availab’ie_———‘lt was left in the hands of the Mayoi-’to see if -.1. room could be provided.The transfer of a lea<e from Flora’ M. The Rev. WI F. Stent waited on the‘ Council on behalf of the Citizens’ Lib-. rary Committee. After being intro-~‘ dueeid by" Cr. The Mayor said the money vote-1 was to be spent in the library, which was 3. peoples’ library. Mr Stout ‘said they Wanted some assurance that it wouldbe zun in :1 more satisfactory manner than in the past. Cr. Reid wanfed to know for what term the committee wanted to central the library. The present C«3un§il could only give control during its own term of office. -.
Mr Stent considered the Cc-uncii should look at the question in a true democratic spirit and let it for an indefinite period_ '
‘CI-. Cunninghame. said the idea. of mentioning “discretion of the Council” was to keep some control over the library and keep out any undesirable element. The Council was anxious to meet the committee, and the condition was more a matter of form than anything else_ rfhe citizens’ committee read more into the conditions than was intended.
A general discussion then took place, Hr Stent stating they could not run the reading roonrseparately. U 13.der this control the reading room would still be open to the pxiblio. They would look after it, and not hurt it in any shape -or form. An attendant would be appointed to look after the
library. Mr Stent then retired, and after some discussion, during which the Councillors evinced their genuine desire to help the library committee, it was decided to hand over the library to the committee, the tenure to be the term of office of the present Council Messrs Doole and Mairs, as a deputation from the Rangitikei County Council, waited on the Council in an endeavour to get the :=CCtiO)l at the corner of Hautapu Street and the street leading therefrom to Carver Street vested in the Rangitikei County Council. .It was exiilainod by the deputation that this Council wanted the section on which to ereet a. substantial‘ -building for the county’_d}sH~nqsipi%‘i§‘ments. as it was intended to ‘station the assistant engineer in Taihmwe. Cr. R. A. Davies delivered an interesting report on "‘ Harnessing the River,” ‘and water supply ma-tters generally, for which he was complimented by the Mayor. A report will appear in a. future issue.
A report by the Engineer on the catchment area ab"o've the present reservoir was read and adopted, and is reported in another column. This being all the business, the Council rose at 11.30.
