SEMETERIES IN FRANCE
GATHERING OF THE DEAD.
Received 11 45 a.m. N WELLINGTON, Sept. 18. The Hon. T. Mackenzie, who has returned from a visit to cemeteries in France and Belgium, states that the work of gathering scattered bodies and forming cemeteries is progressing well, and when finished will be a grand memorial of the Dominion's men. Work is being carried out: with great care and veneration. ONLY BASIS OP PEACE. MORE HUMANE PRACTICE. Received 11.45 a.m. LONDON, Sept. 17. Lord Robert Cecil, in the course of a paper read on his behalf at the Brotherhood Conference, said although the war was so horrible, it was better than condoning a crime, and until something was substituted to restrain international wrongdoing war was the only recourse, and would recur with in. creasing ferocity and destruetiveness. Every method of keeping peace, except a League of Nations, had been tried and failed. If, however, we relied on provisions of the Covenant to pieserve peace, we would be living i:i a fool's paradise. The real motive of peace must be sought elsewhere. The only solution would be the application of the principles of Christianity to in'ternational. relations by followiing the "broad bases of mercy and pity.
