BEATTY’S FISHERMEN.
] ASSISTANCE TO THE NAVY. l Admiral Sir David Beatty had a. lrousing reception at Yarmout-h on the occasion of the presentation of the “freedom of the borough. Tens of thousands of people cheered Sir David and “Lady Beatty with unbounded enthusiasm. Responing, to his election as a freeman, Sir David Beatty said: Yarmouth is the centre of a great sea industry which breeds a race of seamen second to none in the World. During the war the fishermen proved a magnificent addition to the naval personnel. Without them it would not have been‘s€pos--Isible for the navy to achieve that rapid expansion necessary to deal with the outrageous submarine campaign of the enemy, and their equally out.;rageous mining; policy. “I take this lopportunity,” said the admiral, “to express my gratitude" to those gallantj men who turned their fishing knox'-r----ledge to good account, who fished for mines instead of fish, and kept the ’paths of the sea. clear for the ships under my command. Their knowledge, skill, and hardihood stood the Empire in good stead, and they will have imrnciise satisfaction in returning to their I more peaceful calling in the knowledge that they have performed a great Work.” In honouring him Yarmouth honoured one of the most splendid and loyal body of men, whose endeavours had been, and always would be, t) live up to the dictum of the great naval hero, Nelson, which could be expressed in three simple wrods, “Do your duty.” (Cheers)
,At the luncheon Sir David said that without the counsel and‘ courage of the women of England the men of Eng-
‘land would not have been able to sustain their part. “I owe to Lady Bcatty,” he added, “a great debt of gratitude for sustaining me in the past; four alfd a—half years, and I think His Worship for his worfls in which he has recognised the task which she has per. formed.”
