The San Francisc-io} Cill'OlliClC‘_, in an article by its sporting editor’ Hany B. Slnitli, has some interesting refer(‘:llCL‘S to the recent. contest for the : Wo~l'l G. "S "h{cElVy}\Vc~.i g}: t I(3hfim11;piI011-".s‘11ipi_, under the title of “Dompsc-y’s Boos’"rvl's Going ‘Too St,-01,33?! He says; “Jack Dempsey, ch2ill‘engcl',, was picked by no more than 50 per cent. of the fight. writers in gcilerzii. But now that Jack’s star is in the ascendrancy, now that Dempsey is the champion of the world, 7310 bdys,'cv'6fi those who pickcd.Willal'd to wn, have jumped aboard the band wagon to proclaim Jack Dempsey the most formidable opponent the fistic {vovrld has ever son in =action.
M=any of the good things Said 11130“ Dempsey are warrzintecl. But the enthusiasts are inclined ’EO 3'o 3 bit i.'stx'Ong. Dempisey uuquels‘tiouu'bl)’ s's‘ entitled /to his honours. H 0 0111’“°d his title beyond any doubt". I believe he will hiold fast to the title for some lime to come.
But. the naming of Dempsey the best of null the heavyweights the world had ever seen is going it :1, bit: too s’rl'ong. I believe there are at least ‘two -and possibly three men who could be I'eekone(l in their prime to give Dempsey :1. tussle. One of these fellows is Bob FitzSimmons. All‘-other is Jack Johnson, while the, third candidate. possibly, v.'nuld be James J_ .TL‘fi'l'ieS. Bob Fitzsimmons was not particulal'ly a
shmig defensive fighter, but a chap who depended vel'y~Tal'gely upon a. single punch. In many of his fights, if you will recall past history, Fitzsimmans, always a slow starter, was lmockod. down on Occasions before he got in his deadly punch.
Jack Johnson, in -my humble opinion, would have given Dempsey some trying-moments. Johnson was the greatest defensive ‘fighter I have watched. Jack Dempsey might find it hard work to get through the Johnson guard, hn'rd_er than even with ‘the bulk of Willard} Dempsey seems to have made a successful: specialty of big eh-aps, but Johnson would have been up and coming. A fight of that calibre. would easily have been worth watching‘. 4
