Y.M.C.A. WAR FUNDS.
BALANCESHEET CRITICISED. RETURNED SOLDIERS’ REVIEW. ' WELLINGTON, Sept. 4. ' The general secretary of the New Zealand ‘Returned’ Soldiers" Association," Mr: D. Seymour," in a lengthy statement issued: last night, points out that itis close’ upon a fortnight since the National Executive of the Young Men's Christian Association ‘promised to secure for publication the report of the .. auditors on the war funds’ balancer sheefst, His aqsoeialtion rwas -e'o-n?set-quently unable to delay longer in publishing an answering statement. The statement remarks that the returned Sqldiers’ Assiofifiationl ‘regrets that the figures now published fall short of what they are supposed to represent, namely, a full statement of the income -and expenditure of the gpatfriotic laccount contrefiled by’ the- ,_ trustees and executive of the Y.M_C.A. ’ War fund and a balance-sheet of Dominion transactions. Subsidiary accounts in connection with coupons, and the Soldiers Hostel in Boulcott street see light for the first time, while the - London statements cover a difierent period from -the Dominion accounts, and prove wonthless in :-any attemnt to arrive at a reconciliation with the main account. “The statement now before the publie,” the general secretary continues, “strengthens the opinion previously held that an independent inquiry into’ theimanagement of patriotic funds is needed in the interests both of sub- _ scribers and of the men whom it was, intended to relieve. After examination K" of this reply éthed‘ Returned Soldiers’fi , Association feels fully justified in main. taining that the explanation made by; the Y.M.C.A. executive, not only does! not prejudice the attitude of the Re-9 ‘turned Soldiers’ Association in its de-M ' mand for a. Commission of Inquiry, but J‘ actually strengthens the Returned} Soldiers’ Associations case by admit-1i ‘ting careless and faulty accounting, and the use of funds for other purposes! than those for which they were sub-it scribed.” l l A FATAL snoorme CASE. 3 l WELLINGTON, this day. -1 The police received advice that ‘Charles Reside fatally shot. Christopher Carr .at,Cl'onbar, 30 miles from Master- ‘ ton.
