“WE HAVE GOT THEM.”
Mr Lloyd Geo?ge recently visited the famous Fort de Vaux at Verdun. The underground, rooms—-—a warren of steel—where the French and Germans had the fiercest haand-to-hand fighting, remain. The walls are all battered by the explosion of hand -grenades, and the floofrs are still stained with bl-ood. At. another part of the battlefield the British Premier was shown a gruesome memorial over the site of a trench fortification, the o"c‘c'upan‘.'s of which were blown up in the course of the Verdun battle. Their bayonets and the barrels cf.’ their rifles can still be seen sticking out -of the ground which covers the mangled remains of the defenders. The whole is enclosed by wire. A tablet erected close by has two senfences engraved upon it. One, dated 1916, says: “‘On les aura!” (“We shall get them!’,’ The other, dated 115, says: “On les 21! ” (“We have got theml”).
