COMMUNITIES WIPED OUT.
In the French ca.nton of Montmedy House there were 10,462 inhabitants before the war, whereas to-day ‘there are but 6365. The popula'tion‘of the district of Montmedy the day ‘the armistice was signed was 13,389; before ‘the war it was 18,193. There are no insabitants left in the canton of Dun-sur-Meuse; while the cantons of Domvillers has only 357 persons left out ‘of a former 5074. Thepopulation of Verdun has shrunk from 67,171 to 6165. The can;tons of Charny, Etain, Fresnes-sur-Meuse and "Varenn‘es are now deserted, While before «the war their populations were respectively 10.337. 9561, 9011, and 4980.
