THE MEAT EXPORT TRADE. EXTERMINATION OF RABBITS. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 27. At the annual meeting of the Cantor. bury Sheepowners’ Union, the chairman, Mr T. D. Bu'rr'iett, in moving the adoption of the report and balancesheet, incntioned, inter alia, that HlO Union was in no way “up against” Labour, believing in the: true British principle that the “other man” should be heard. " . ~ I Regarding the sale and distribution of meat, it was agreed that. no delegation should=be sent to England to discuss the question at Home until the Federated Meat Committee ghad been called together. It was resolve‘d to -take steps to form a New Zeasl-and Producers’ Co-operative Association. ‘ The rabbit nuisance was discussed, and it was agreed" that Captain Neale should be written =to regarding the use of gas in the destruction of the pest. The following resolution was also carried: “That in the opinion of the sheep—owners of Canterbury, it is not in the best interests of the province that a lucrative trade be built up in rabbit export. and na-bbit fur, and that the national interests are best served by the extermination -of the rabbit_” Mention was made of the ravages of keas among high crountry flocks, and‘ it was ‘decided to urge the Government to be more earnest in its steps‘ to exterminate the birds.
