THE HOUSING PROBLEM
AN IMPORTANT CONFERENCE. ‘ WELLINGTON, Aug. 29. "A conference convened by the VVellington Repatriation Board discussed the housing problem. The chairman of the Repatriation Board presided, and delegates from the City Council, Harbour Board, Returned Soldiers’ Association, Town-Planning Association and Labour Department were present. It was decided to urge upon the Government the imperative necessity of building a large number of houses to meet the present need. It Was dcided that the Government be requested to immediately set up a I-lensing Commission, whose duty it should be to indicate to local authorities their obligations in the matter of ;llOllSlllg' in their districts, to approve ‘rhousing schemes, and to grant loans] ‘necessary in.the carrying out of the! schemes. l Mr F. W. Rowley (Supß,l'intelldClltl‘ of Wo"1-kers’ Dwellings) said he had no } doubt if all went well with tenders: for the erection of 200 houses authlorised, the Government would authorise a further 200 as soon as the Department’s system. was 011 a sound footing financially_ ‘ The following resolutions were carried.
