Otairi Riding.——Widening points ‘at Otairi has been completed. I propose to continue talcing off points near concrete ford bridge. ‘At the request of Ohingaiti ratepayers, I made an exhaustive inspection of their surface drainage, and am endeavouring to arrange with the Railway Department, and private owners, to carry the storm‘water from the hills of the township “to” the. north. Gravel repairs are being eariricd out 011 several by-roads, which ihave had to be neglected for some itime, owing to scarcity of‘ la‘-sour. Tenders have been invited for cutting 250 cords of firewood for burning ipapa for repairs on Rongoiti-Koeka Iroad_

Ruanui Riding—-Roads generally are sloppy, but in fair order. A careful inspection has been made of the new gravel pit. at Ngaurukehu. The detritus is a volcanic deposit, si:‘.liE-:3: to Wangaehu riverbed gravel, but -"on--taining many large boulders. lam having it thoroughly opened up and tested. The pit is about 100 chains from the Ruanui road, about three. miles from Mataroa. If found <.:.u..:5-factory factory it will be found c:-.3-;;,'1o1ni(:al to lay. a self-acting tramline to bring» sonle‘l2,oOo cubic yards down nearroad line where a crusher cbuld deal with it, preparatory to being carted‘ on to the road. In the meantime I propose to .a.'.vertise for the necessary second-hand iron rails, then when pit is tested and loan proposal decided, the dew.-'.c:p-xiient of pit can be put in -hand, so as to be. ready for a vigorous prosecution of the work, when fine weather sets in. Erewhon Riding.—Roads generally are in good order for winter time. Awarua Riding.—Gl-avel repairs and widening points are in hand on Man-e gaweka-Utiku Main Road. Drawings have been prepared for bridge over Upper Kawhatau river on Rangitane road, and are now in hands of Public Works Department, for consideration. I have forwarded to Scotland a specification of the wire rope required, so that when details are completed, they can be cabled for. When the Public Works Department approve of designfor Ka-whatau river, similar drawings will be made for Hikurangi river, and the complete drawings and specifications submitted for approval.
