CODE DUEL WITH ENEMY.
A “HARMLESS” TRICK. The British Postal Censor’s Depart.ment, where from 300,000 to 400,000 letters to and from all parts of the world were examined daily, has been discontinued. The genius of the department’ was a young Cambridge University professor who before the war mustered intricate codes as a hobby. His war years were one long duel with the German. At times he lulled the German into false security by forwarding letters on, marking Ithem “harmless.” Encouraged in the belief that he had hit on'a code that had eluded the professor, the German would carry 011 with it, providing information of vital imporltance. Among the Department ’s treasures is a copy of Homer. It looks innocent enough, but, after turning over the firsit. few pages , instead of |H~onler, you come across a violent rattack on British rule in India. _
