RE FOOTPATHS.
Dear sir,—ln response to your request by ’phone, re above.---Concrete slabs; These, if properly made, give good service on Well drained and consolidated foundations. These you lack in‘ Tfaihape gencrally. ‘ln practice, -slabs are‘ only adopted in cities where the footwalk traffic is extremely heavy, -and where coiftinual disturbances are taking place. to reach the underground Works of the city, such as service water mains, gas, and electric light conduits, ets_ This class-- of pavement is extremely ‘costly. -and in my opinion is not warranted in Taihape. Asphalt: This generally is adopted for footwalk work for boroughs, and‘ if properly laid, 1§- inches in thickness, with prepared tar, to British road road standard, will give a maximum of service at a mininium of cost. It is smooth, resilent, sanitary ,and easy of repair, Tar sand seal: Paths in residential areas should not require more than a. good coat of metal well rolled wet to consolidated smooth surface, then tar sealed with prepared tar, and blinded with sharp grit, prepared tar being used -as before. ‘ ’ I would strongly reconiment cutting out concrete slabs for Taihape, and using asphalt for business area, and tar seal for residential area. This will be found the most economical me-thod !Of footpath construction for such a. ‘ borough as Taihape. L SYDNEY A. R. MAIR, E County Engineer-
