A 1 ‘TERRIBLE EXPLOSION. I ' CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 23. This afternoon people in Cathedral Square were startled by a terrific explosion, which occurrcd in the prem‘ises of W. J. Bull, typewriter expert, Chancery Lane, adjoining Evcrybody’s ZPJ°ctur€s_ The‘ theatre was holding a session at the time and the audience which included many children, was considerably startled. The whole of ]3ull’s workshops and office were badly damaged. A youth named Charles ;MlcGlashan was cleaning a typewriter with benzme, which ignited and caused the explosion. McGlashan was badly burnt about the face and had several severe cuts. He was removed to the hospital. Largo sections of the Walls of the workshop were blown out, and the ceiling fell in. All the windows‘ in the immediate vicinity were E-battered. The Wall dividing the Workshop from Evcryhody’s was bulg~ ed out, but did not collapse.
