ENCOURAGING SOLDIER SETTLEMENT.
DANNEVIRKE, this day. A. meeting of ieturncd soldiers passed the following resolutions: (1) That lack of finance should lie. no bar to returned soldiers having zilzcess to ballots; production of la. discharge from the expeditionary forces should be the sole qualification for. the right .-to go to the ballot. (2) That first rent on improved landsbe capitalised and added to future payments; (3) That the Government supply iron, wire, ete., to settlers at CO-S-l3'lpl'iCO; (4) that this meeting enlphatically'protests against the niggardly and’ parsimonious spirit displayed by the Government in connection with soldier settlement. LARGE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS_ DANNEVIRKE, this day. The Hawkc’s Bay Land Board t-0-day commenced the examination of applicants for the Tira-Iu Soldier "Soft-’lenlent, on the outskirts of Dannevirke. There was a total of 370 individual‘ applications from all over New Zealand received for 34 sections, ninety per cent of the land seekers having applied for eadh iseclfion. The ‘ballot xvii? not take place before to-morrow.
