ENCOURAGING SOLDIER SETTLEMENT.

DANNEVIRKE, this day. A. meeting of ieturncd soldiers passed the following resolutions: (1) That lack of finance should lie. no bar to returned soldiers having zilzcess to ballots; production of la. discharge from the expeditionary forces should be the sole qualification for. the right .-to go to the ballot. (2) That first rent on improved landsbe capitalised and added to future payments; (3) That the Government supply iron, wire, ete., to settlers at CO-S-l3'lpl'iCO; (4) that this meeting enlphatically'protests against the niggardly and’ parsimonious spirit displayed by the Government in connection with soldier settlement. LARGE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS_ DANNEVIRKE, this day. The Hawkc’s Bay Land Board t-0-day commenced the examination of applicants for the Tira-Iu Soldier "Soft-’lenlent, on the outskirts of Dannevirke. There was a total of 370 individual‘ applications from all over New Zealand received for 34 sections, ninety per cent of the land seekers having applied for eadh iseclfion.
