PRICE OF TURPINTINE.
VALUE DOUBLES IN A MON’IIH'. Turpentine, which has lately been increasing in price, has made an extraordinary jump, with the result that values have practically doubled in a month. The’ wholesale price in month ago was 8/6 per gallon. On iiugiist 7 it was 9/10, and today the American quotations have been received at 12/4 c.i.f, and e., ‘New Zealand. This last price is based on the dollar conversion rate of 4.7, but as rates have declined and there will be a 30~dol1ar freight, it is considered that the wholesale price here will run from 15/ ‘to 16/ a gallon. Merchants here can give no explanation of the reason for the rise, save that it is stated that large interests in America control the spirit_ Jfiortunateliy, »a cheap mineral -t.urpentine is used by painters for such Work as cleaning brushes, etc.,, and the vegetable turps, to which "\the aboe prices have reference, is mainly used by house-painters in applying the first coat of paint. _
