CONCRETE V. ASPHALT.
! (To the Editor.) ‘* Sir,—As a referendum will be taken: on August 28th to decide whether conJcreteor asphalt should be used in thefcrmation’ of our footpaths, I, having‘ »-had some practical experiencebin these. 3 ._two materials, would like to give niir-" views on the’ subject. Concrete has! been proved to be suitable, not only?’ for yards and sheep—dips, drains -ana” ships, but it is better than "wood for" dwellings. The man-holes in the Dannevirke sewerage system wereput’ in: by my father and two brothers, also ‘the concrete kerbing and water chan-~ nels, and these three would vote for ’concrete, even if the cost of putting‘ |it down was double that of asphalt. Speaking to one of my brothers a few" days ago on the difference between ‘concrete and asphalt for streets, they gave me to understand that concrete %would be the best to put down, particularly as there is such a. big fall in the streets in Taihape; but asphalt would do just as well as concrete iwhere the streets are level. Asphalt will not stand water running over it in_ large quantities, the same as we have in Taihape at times, and the upkeep would cost about 100 per cent. more than -if set down in concrete. As far a’: my experience goes I would rather have concrete than asphalt, and. I ‘hope’ ' the ratepayers of the borough will take the same vie W.——l am, etc.,e"' J. T. DAVEY
