HONOURS OF WAR. </■ ':' HELIGOLAND, DOGGERVEANK, JUTLAND: Those who visit H.M.S.jNFew Zealand' Tvhile she is in New Zealand waters, and who were aboard the vessel in' 1913, will notice many ""changes on!' board. On the bulkhead of the. deck-* house the New Zealand Coat of Arms is surrounded by the honours won ia battle, which include the Heligoland, Dogger Bank, and Jutland engagements.
Situated beneath the honours scroll was the bell presented to the vessel by H.M.R. Zealandia. Other changes are new search-lights and signalling apparatus, anti-aircraf guns, improved range finders, gunnery direction platforms, and the latest naval compasses.
During the war period the vessel steamed 84,458 miles on 97.034 tons of coal, and though prominent in every big engagement in which the North 1 Sea Fleet -took part, there was no casualties on board. The vessel bore the brunt of the battle cruiser attack at Heligoland, when 82 rounds of ammu--nition were fired, in addition to two torpedoes, one of which struck and sank the cruiser Koln. For services at Jutland the following personnel of the ship were decorated:—Captain J. F. E. Green, C.B.;' Major H. Blount, D. 5.0.; Chief Petty Officer E. Fitzgerald, D.S.M.; Petty Officer W. J. Harvey, D.S.M.; and Chief E. R A. S. S. Tozcr, D.S.M.
H.M.S. New Zealand was present at the surrender of the Gorman Grand Fleet in November, 1918, being detailed to search the Derfflingcr.
