MR RUSSELL’S BIG HEART.
APPEAL BY SIR JOSEPH WARD. “I propose to let Sir Joseph Ward see how some of the men he left hehind him failed to assist the soldiers to get adequate club rooms,” said the Mayor of Christchurch, in welcoming the Minister for Finance at a; gathering of returned soldiers. Dr. Thacker said the Minister for Internal Affairs had prevented the Lady Liverpool Com—mittee from donating to the club fund a. sum of £3OOO or more, and he asked Sir Joseph Ward to assist the club to obtain the money. Sir Joseph Vfard said he did not know the circumstances surrounding the amount of £3OOO referred to, but‘ he would be .glad to talk the matter over with Mr Russell on his return to Welliizgton. If the people had‘ £3OOO that they wanted to give away, he hoped that he would be able to touch the soft strings of Mr Russell’s big heart, «and induc"e' him to become the medium through which the amount would be paid. (Cheers.)
