PROFESSOR VON ZEDLITZ.
VICTORIA COLLEGE COUNCIL'S ~ ATTITUDE. INCORRECT REPORT PUBLISHED. ’ WELLINGTON. Aug. 20. A report, that a proposal to reappoint Professor Von Zedlitz to the Chair of Modern Languages at Victoria College had been before the College Council, was mentioned at a. meeting of the Council to-night. ‘A motion was carried placing on recorrl the Council’s regret that matters discussed in committee of the Council last month were given to the Press in an unfair form, and were published without having the report confirmed by the Chairman of the Council.
?The Registrar stated that he -had received letters from three branches of the Returned Soldiers’ Association protesting against the reported intention of the Council to re—appoint Professor Von Zedlitz. The branches appeared to have comnninicated with the Minister‘ of Defence, who had written to the Council asking to be informed What action the Council intended to take in reference to Professor. Von Zedlitz. Sir Robert Stout: We have not taken any action. You had better reply that the subject mentioned by them has not yet been considered‘ by the Council. A Professor Hunter: Would it not be better to say exactly what has been done. The Council has called for applications for the Chair of Modern Languages in New Zealand, Australia, and England, and has done nothing else.
Sir Robert Stout: That is all we have done. The Auckland papers had it. that’ I had made a proposal to reappoint Professor Von Zediitz. The Registrar was instructed to reply to Sir James Allen that the Council hacl merely called for applipafions for the chair_ ’ 9 '
