AGAINST TH E AGGREGATORS.
MR W. T. JENNINGS MAKE"s""" SUGGESTIONS. c———-. 2 INDUSTRIALISM AND THE VVHIT-.. LEY PRICIPLE. —-vs-- I Right out against the aggl'egatioli -of land is Mr VV_ T. Jennings, M.P_a for Taumaxunui, who declared that‘; this evil was still widespread, and that the Minister of Lands -had ad-' mittcd that cases had been brought; to light lately. More than that, aggregation in connection with soldier; settlements ‘had commenced. He instanced the case Where two sections of a settlement divided amongst eight soldiers became. vacant; and instead of the vacant sections being allotted fo new settlers, they were cut uy amongst the renxaining six.
Mr Jennings advocated the cutting up of large estates, and expressed the ‘opinion that the purchasing provisions lot‘ the Land Settlement Act "had «broke ‘ ‘en down owing to the inflated prices that now prevailed. As a remedy hé isnggested that large landowners !should be notified by the Government; ithat it would be necessary for them: its dispose of their lands within a cer; ;tain time, otherwise the Governnlen_fi ‘would take them at the values placed upon them by the official Valuers. ' i To assist the cheap and effective bringing in of the land, Mr Jennings spoke strongly in favour of the form-s ' ation of co-operative manuring con-4 ('L‘l'llS by farmers, particularly in re» gard to the installation of lime-crush-. Eng plants, Improved road f-acilitie§t Vere absolutely necessary for the? _ Laekblockers. ' V THE HOARDED CROWN LANDS. : Ul-ging greater expedition in the ;cpenillg- up of:Crow-n lands, Mr Jeilc ‘Eiirigs’ pointed‘ out that the Taumarfiq lllli_‘"§i_§§tOl‘3._te contained large tracgs ‘x‘.f'(l‘f:':"’if"iiiiiel*§t‘a2'lid "Why it was not more rapidly thrown open to returned solfii-1 iers. He particularly instanced the —»Crow«11~.-landsueast o-.f..-.Ongarue, and. iii the Rangitoto-Tuhua district as being "sll'it'able“‘fOl" "early ‘settlement; “ remark: ing that the settlers in that districfi -had‘ obtained‘_gt§at‘-Lresults from thd ‘land. Ar 7" A LESSON OF THE WAR. » ‘ For‘ the rapid carrying out 013 ‘lrsitlge, road and rail construction and other public works, Mr Jennings ksug-; gcsted that the members of the Tun-4 I‘-.Clllllg' Corps and of the Maori Bat-«.. ‘ytzalion should be organised into con-4‘ ltzactors’ groups, Working under their‘ town oflicers and N_C.Os’., so that in a.‘ civilian capacity’ they could carry out, ‘for the benefit of the Dominion work‘ similar, to their splendid achievements ?in Fr-azice. Contracts could be let to if3l'ti€3 of tunnellers organised in this iway. ‘ _ * I
