AN ACCOMPLISHED SWINDLER.

AUCKLAND, Aug. 18. Four charges of having obtained credit to ‘the extent of nearly £SO by fraud from Auckland fruit and produce merchants were preferred against Jas_ I-I. Johnston, alias Wm. R. Hill, alias John Here, aged 62 years, in the Supreme Court. Accused, who was found guilty, conducted ~operations from New Plymouth. In sentencing the accused to 18 months’ imprisonment, Mr Justice Chapman said the long and short of it was thlait accused was an accomplished swindler, and there was no doubt his appearance was one of his assets in carrying on the practices ‘complained of.
