BRITISH TRAWLING TRADE.

GREAT POST—VVAR ACTIVITY. MANY VESSELS NOW RELEASED. Nearly 1000 trawlcrs and driftcrs "have been denlobilished« in Britain, and it is understood that the Governmcnt is working on a scheme of training demobilised -officers and men for the increased efficiency of the fishing service. This scheme is being carried out. in conjunction with the Fishing Vessels Owners’ Association, wiffi a view to the prompt manning of the ‘fishing trawlers and drifters as they are rapidly demobilised from minesweeping and naval work. Unemployed fishermen at one port will receive quick notification of opDol'tllni‘ ties at other ports. Especially at the East Coast ports is this process being carried on.

Mahy demobilised officers of the naval and military service have expressed their readiness to take up the fishing industry as a living under the training and supervision of the Governmcnt ‘scheme, which provides for financial assistance and instruction.

Another very important piece of constructive work is that the Government is working out a scheme for the construction of staiidardiscd inshore fishing vessels for the use of the “smalL_” man, and also for assisting the demobiliscd fisherman who has a small capital available By the means of these ideas it is hoped considerably to develop the fishing industry and increase the export tradc. Before the war Germany received large quantities of barrelled

-herrings from England, and the question is being considered as to whother the surplqs fish, instead of being destroyed, as it is alleged has taken place in Scotland, ‘cannot be exported to Germany, where the market demand has always been a large one.
