J- JNorth said he had been informed that efforts would be made next session to increase totalisator permits, especially to country clubs. There were alarming developments in connection With the whole matter of racing. Rev_ North moved that in view of the surrcptitious attempt by racing clubs to secure legislation enlarging gambling facilities and undoing the restrictions imposed by the considered legislation of 1910: (1) This’Council urges on the Prime Minister the impropriety of treating a matter so vitally connected with the well being of the country by the present Parliament and (2) Instructs its committee to present to the next meeting of the Council a survey of the conditions of the State licensing of gambling and the probable effacts of amendments which racing clubs are urging on the extension of the vice.
The motion was carried unanimous--Iy. A " A COSTLY BET. WELLINGTON, Aug. 18. At the Magistrate’s Court, James Donnelly, charged with having made a bet in the Grand Hotel, was fined £3O. ‘
