The remarkable memory "Eor faces ;.\u‘.<?S;‘->.F\"d by Mrs James W, Gerard, wife of the former Ambazssador ’t3o Gel'nl=any, has resulted in the conviction for ten years of Henry Bode, the only American soldier known to have ventered the service of Germany as a-
spy. V Bode’s career has been adventurous. Born at Wilhelmshaveu in 1877, 11c Went to San Francisco as a Stowaway in 1890, and enlisted a few years later in the United States’ Navy. After Working -as a miner at Butee, N[onl:ana, he Went to Klondyk-e. He nr-ado £3200, but lost it by gambling. Bode next married an American woman at Dayrton, Ohio, and entered are‘ Russian service -as a. spy. He escaped capture by the Japanese by disguising himself as :1 woman. He -afterwards went to Mexico, and enlisted in Maderio’s army, and deserted from Fort Bliss, Texas, wllen'the war broke out. He worked his way to Denmark, and joined the German army, servedilllldcl‘ M3l“ shal Mackensen, was twiee wounded, and received the iron cross. In the autumn of 1915, he was summned to Berlin, assigned to the Intelligence Department, supplied with men:-y, and Hl- - to report to ‘the Gsnnan Consulate in New York. Before he left he called at the American Embassy, and was seen in German uniform by Mrs Gerard. On his arrival in New York, in the character of William Reed, the German Consulate gave him £440. He travelled to Vera Cruz, his instructions being to blow up the Tam-V pico oilfields, and einbroil the United States in war with Mexico.
In July, 1918, to «escape arrest by ‘Ehe Curranzist troops, he crossed into C:-lifornia, was detained by the immigration officials, and later sent. to Governor’s Island, where Mrs Gerard identificd him Frank Hall, the Ambassa(‘.or’s val-et, tcstified he was a spy who d»"g,ged Mr Goral'd’s footsteps when the Ambassador returned to the United States via Madrid.———New York _corr.espondent Daily Mail.
