BURGLARS ABROAD.
A rather daring and impudent burglary took place in Taihape, on Sunday, 10th August. With a crow-bar the back-door of MeLaughlan Bros. store was broken open, and it seems that the office of the firm received first aftentioii when once inside A cash-box that was left out of the safe was broken and its contents annexed. A cash-box belonging to the Returned Soldiers’ Association was also smashed and rifled. The cash desk was then explored, and it seems that the thieves had‘. some inside knowledge of the firm:’s secrets, as a secreted key was taken from hiding and the till was unlocked, and what it contained went to swell the proceeds from. the twocas-‘n.-V boxes. The safe, it seems, was too big a job, or time was pressing as, after prelim-Inary efforts with the croW—bar upon it the quest of what it held was given up. The store was next visited and among other things one full box and two half-boxes of cigarettes are missing It is said some persons are fairly generous with their cigarettes. Business people should take Warning by Messrs McLaug‘nlan Bros’ experience for it is not unlikely a crop of such offences may be reaped if any carelessness is practiced.
