AUCKLAND, Aug. 13

The Auckland branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association has decided to withhold all moneys from headquarters until that body hands over unconditionally to the Auckland Provincial committee all amounts due to it under the decision of the recent conference that provincial committees shall receive for organisation purposes two shillings out of every four shillings capitation fee paid to headquarters by the branch association The opinion was expressed that the action of headquarters in not fulfilment the letter or spirit of the conference decision was to block political propaganda. Several members spoke of cutting adrift from the New Zealand body if the present course be persisted by headquarters The Auckland branch membership approaches ten thousand

OBITUARY CHIEF JUDGE JACKSON PALMER. WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. Chief Judge Jackson Palmer, of the Native Land Court, died this morning from lethargic encephalitis. He had been ill for the past four months, and for a week his condition had been such that his death was not unexpected. The deceased left a widow, but no family. mining trouble.

NO PROSPECT OF STTLEMENT

WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. The secretary of the Miners Federation (Mr J. Arbuckle) said to-day that so far as his organisation was concerned there was no prospect of a settlement of a dispute with the nine owners. “Certainly,” he said, “there would be no settlement on the basis proposed by the employers, for the conditions of the offers were such as to make acceptance impossible from the point of view of the miners.”
