WORKERS AND FARMERS.
(To the Editor) Sir,_——l notice in your issues of the 4th inst. that “Worker” suggests, inter alia, that farmers should join hands. with the Labour party, and by so doing oust the extremist, and purge the. platform of the party. It. would be-. interesting to witness" the reception. that farmers would get should they do. as suggested, for although all workers and farmers should have much in
common, there are a few points one which their aims and ideas are absolutely opposed. For instance, the average ;farvlnel' believes that a higher standard of living, to which we all aspire, must go hand in hand: with greater, or ‘better, production,; while; the worker, if judged by the standards. of the minors and Wharflabourers, ‘believesethat the end canebest.-be obtain--ed by increasing jobs ra,ther.-than production. Had the suggested amalga-m-ation lbeen ‘an accomplished f;act,~what would have been the attitude ofWorkcrs if farmers had unloaded -the collier‘ at \Vangan_ui lately in the in--terests of production? Before “Waiker” can hope to gather either formersi or the general public into the Labour fold he will have, to replace the gospel.’ of “Loyalty to Party” with the gospel of “Loyalty to right,” and be prepared. «to co:n‘si‘d‘etr ithe interests of other sections of the community. This‘ reform can only come from within theT'lEll‘t_Y. and in the meantime I be‘icve a. considerable number of farmers await the opportunity of joining hands‘ with him for the common weal.——l am_,.. ete., .
