KING COUNTRY HARDSHIPS
SETTLERS UNABLE TO TRAVEL TAUMARUNUI, Aug. 1. There is a good deal of dissatisfaction and concern among the people of Tau'nlal-unui and surrounding districts over the latest restrictions in the _3m‘lwnv _u~’vice. The train which jwent south this morning was out 7down to three carriages and rumours are afloat of many hardships imposed on the public. It is stated that cne man was refused permission to go to his work at Kakahi. Another resident of Owhango was not allowed to come to town tn important business. But the greatest hardship of all will be on settlers in small districts who find it necessary to use the train Services almost daily.
It is stated that the tablet porters have been taken off on most of the small stations‘ between Taumarunui and Raurimu,-"and this evidently means that no facilities are to be granted to settlers in these districts. The public are becoming indignant in Taumarunui and are asking‘ that someone shoiild take a lead in demanding an explanation from the Department as to why
Taumarunui is declared a suburban area_ A I It is said that in the railway regulations there are only four suburban areas, viz., Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington.
